As you’ve probably already heard there has been another sex scandal at Duke. Surprise, surprise.
The “Duke Fuck List” a 42 page Power point presentation has gone viral. Many of them men listed were lacrosse players…again. Surprise. Surprise. The presentation goes into vast amounts of detail for each sexual conquest.

While I have my opinions on this scandal (and seeing as all I do is rant)… I really want to know… what do you think of Miss Karen Owen? And of the "fuck list"?

ReplyDeletePersonally, I think it's hilarious! I firmly advocate the use of such a rating system on all men, perhaps to be included on a search engine like Google. That way, when we meet an eligible bachelor, we just have to type in his name to view his rating, complete with pros and cons! GENIUS!!

ReplyDeleteI don't understand why the media is treating her as some kind of anomaly/slut. Have they been to a university lately? According to the list she only slept with 13 guys right? That's really pretty conservative compared to some girls at my school. I think the list is funny, but it shouldn't be making national news.

@ Delilah - I think the media is treating her like a slut because, uh, she kind of acted like one. I graduated in 2007, from a big state school, and people still managed to have relationships. It sounds like almost all of her encounters were short-term relationships, or just effing. You have to be prepared for a bit of backlash, male or female, when you're just having sex with no real emotional attachment to the person.
ReplyDelete@ Juliana - I have no doubt that she'll get sued by someone, but it's going to be really hard for her to lose the case. They'd have to prove that what she wrote was false.
And regarding the whole thing... I'm very meh on the whole story. I might feel sorry for the guys, except that it was their decision to hook up with a woman without forming any sort of emotional connection. Sometimes you get syphilis, sometimes nothing happens, and sometimes she tells every person you've ever known that you have a small dick.
Likewise, I can't feel sorry for whatever sort of feedback she gets. Hasn't she ever seen Mean Girls, or any of the other 5 million movies that deal with friends betraying another friend's trust? What could have possibly compelled her to think that writing about every sexual encounter she had would be a good idea?

ReplyDeleteWhat irritates me about the situation though is how the media is upholding the typical double standard bullshit. They make her out to be a slut, and we all know if guys talked about how many girls they've slept with that they'd just be... guys. If anything, the guys should be stoked they were even documented with full names and all!
OK first of all I went to Duke - I was there during the lacrosse "scandal" and I know some of the guys on miss Karen's "list" - i don't doubt for a second that things happened exactly how she says they did.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about this powerpoint. Don't think she's THAT far beyond a lot of girls at Duke, most girls just aren't "fratty" enough to put it all out there. Maybe she's trying to subvert the dominant paradigm!

BTW I was emailed this powerpoint 10 days ago from a close guy friend who was in a frat at duke. they do in fact send their sex lists around the fraternity but just have codes of conduct not to pass that shit on or else they'd be hung out to dry. I had NO IDEA this had gone viral until i saw it on your blog today.
